Notified Bodies

These are independent organisations appointed by EU Member State governments, with the responsibility for conformity assessment and certification. In the UK there are 10 notified bodies.

You can find details of these in this document published by the Office for Product Standards & Safety ‘Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Regulations – OPSS PPE Legislation Guidance for Businesses, Version 2 – April 2020’.

Manufacturers/importers in the UK do not have to use UK notified bodies, but can choose any from within the EU, and you can find the full list here.

How do I know if the PPE is legal and genuine?

This checklist, provided by the British Safety Industry Federation,  includes:

• A CE Certificate Checklist
• A Declaration of Conformity Checklist
• A sample EU Declaration of Conformity showing you what to look for
